EV vs petrol vs hybrid: running cost

Compare what an electric car, a petrol car and a hybrid really cost to run in Pakistan — fuel versus electricity, maintenance and, if you like, depreciation.

What goes into the comparison

Fuel cost

Monthly km ÷ km per litre × petrol price, for both the petrol car and the hybrid.

Electricity cost

Monthly km × kWh per 100 km, grossed up for charging losses, at a blend of your grid and solar prices.

Maintenance

Your yearly service estimate for each car, spread across the months. EVs skip oil changes and use brakes less.

Frequently asked questions

Is an EV cheaper to run than a petrol car in Pakistan?

Per kilometre, almost always. Electricity from home or solar costs far less per km than petrol, and EVs need less routine maintenance (no oil changes, fewer brake jobs). Whether an EV is cheaper overall depends on the purchase price, how much you drive and how long you keep the car.

How does solar charging change the numbers?

Charging from your own solar panels can cut the energy cost to a fraction of the grid price. Use the 'Charging from solar' slider to see how much of your charging needs to come from solar to change the result.

Should I include depreciation?

If you plan to sell the car after a few years, yes — depreciation is often the biggest cost of owning any new car. Resale values for EVs in Pakistan are still uncertain, so try a few depreciation rates to see the range.

What costs are not included?

Insurance, registration and token tax, tyres, financing interest and home charger installation are not included. They can differ between the three options, so factor them in separately.
