Home charging safety basics

Use a dedicated circuit

A charger draws high current for hours. It needs its own circuit and correctly rated breaker (e.g. 32A for 7 kW) — never share it with an AC or geyser.

Proper earthing & RCD

Good earthing and a Type A (or Type B) RCD protect against shocks. Many older homes in Pakistan lack a proper earth pit — get it tested.

The car's AC limit matters

Your car's onboard charger decides the maximum AC power. A 22 kW wallbox on a car limited to 7 kW still charges at 7 kW.

Single vs three phase

Single-phase homes top out around 7 kW. 11 and 22 kW chargers need a three-phase supply, which may require a load extension from your DISCO.

Cable & location

Mount the wallbox close to where you park, sheltered from rain and direct sun. Use correctly sized copper cable — undersized wiring overheats.

Use a qualified installer

Always have a licensed electrician inspect your wiring, DB box and meter capacity before installing. It protects your home and your car's warranty.

Frequently asked questions

Which home charger do I need for my EV?

For most drivers in Pakistan a 7 kW single-phase wallbox is plenty: it adds 35–45 km of range per hour and refills a typical daily commute in one to two hours overnight. Faster 11 or 22 kW chargers only help if your home has a three-phase supply and your car's onboard AC charger accepts that power.

Can I charge my EV from a normal socket?

Many EVs come with a portable charger for a 3-pin socket. It is slow (about 2–2.3 kW) and must only be used on a dedicated, properly earthed 16A circuit in good condition. Never use extension leads or multi-plugs.

What does the car's 'AC onboard charger' limit mean?

Home and public AC chargers supply alternating current; the car converts it to DC for the battery using its onboard charger. That onboard charger has a maximum power — for example 6.6, 7 or 11 kW. A wallbox bigger than this won't charge the car any faster.

Do I need permission from my DISCO to install a home charger?

A standard 7 kW charger usually fits within a normal residential sanctioned load, but check your sanctioned load on your bill. If you add a large charger or need three-phase, you may need to apply to your distribution company (LESCO, K-Electric, IESCO etc.) for a load extension.
